Flux 2023 Brisbane Ekka

In August 2023, we took part in our largest production to date – 9 nights of human fireworks (pyro dancing) at the Royal Queensland Exhibition (the Ekka). We had a blast of a time as we fielded 6 incredibly talented performers, in what was definitely some Australian first acts! We had 6 performers evenly spaced around the arena – performing 4 separate segments in choreography.

Each segment was a different variety of a long duration pyrotechnics prop. All Flux acts at the 2023 Ekka were handheld fireworks (pyrotechnics dancing) acts. Backed by an incredible outdoor fireworks and flame display by Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics – Flux had approximately 4 minutes worth of performance time spread throughout the 12-minute evening show, each night.

6 pyro performers in choreography performed pyro-fans, pyro-double staff, lycopodium

flamethrower, pyro-dragonstaff and pyro-poi.

It may not sound like much – but those 4 minutes of choreographed dancing with fireworks across 6 pyro performers, required lengthy setups post show each evening – and all day the following day. In total (only for the evening shows – not including the technical rehearsal and media), Flux performers used 1080 pieces of pyrotechnics product in 9 nights – not to mention the 10kg of lycopodium powder that was used to help fill a short segment of the show.

Most of the Flux Ekka team having grown up in Brisbane and having childhood memories of visiting the Ekka, it was a pleasure for all of us to be able to provide such an impactful part of the 2023 evening entertainment!
